Layering light in a living room
A room lit only from the ceiling looks flat; two or three lamps at different heights give it depth. A simple pattern is one floor lamp for reading and a pair of table lamps at seated eye level, each on its own switch, so the room can be lit in stages through the evening.
Over a sofa, an arc such as the Hampden Floor Lamp, 63 inches wide on a marble base, puts a domed metal shade above the seat while the base stays clear of the seating. The 17¾-inch Stratford Marble Table Lamp, used in a pair on side tables, fills in at seated height with a straight fabric drum. In a bedroom, keep lamps low and shaded: the 9⅞-inch Essex Marble Table Lamp caps its straight linen drum with a matching stone disc. Warm-white bulbs around 2700K suit both rooms.
Start with floor lamps or table lamps, or go straight to arc floor lamps, marble table lamps, wood table lamps and bedside table lamps. Each look has its own edit: Japandi lighting, organic modern lighting and modern lighting.
