About Japandi

Seven Japandi coffee tables in walnut, bamboo, plywood and solid wood sit here alongside thirteen floor and table lamps, ten of them built on wood bases, stems or legs.

What makes a coffee table or lamp Japandi

Japandi joins Japanese restraint with Scandinavian practicality, and in a coffee table that shows up as low height and visible structure. Five of the seven tables stand 15 inches high or less. The Duncan Coffee Table is a solid wood plank on square legs braced by a stretcher at each end, 47¼ by 23⅝ inches and 15 inches high; the Avondale Coffee Table bends molded plywood into one continuous loop, 43¾ inches wide and 11 inches high, with its pale ply edge left exposed; the Kingston fills its trestle ends with woven cane.

In lighting, the look favors light that is filtered rather than bright. The Dalton Floor Lamp hangs a rice paper shade from a slim iron arc, adjustable from 57⅛ to 70⅞ inches, and the Vance Table Lamp sets a coarse oatmeal cone over a tapered wood column 15¾ inches high. Keep bulbs warm, around 2700K, so the light sits with the wood tones rather than against them.

To put a room together, hold to two or three wood tones and let one texture, such as cane, paper or coarse fabric, carry the interest. Browse by type in Japandi coffee tables and Japandi floor and table lamps, or compare wood coffee tables across every look. The organic modern collection takes the same materials toward softer curves, and modern toward dark lacquer and stone; see our style and light guide for more on combining them.
