Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before and after your order. Shipping and returns have pages of their own, linked from the answers below.
Products & Materials
Materials vary by piece. For most of the collection the material is named in the Materials and Care section of the product page, which links through to a full guide for that material. Where a specific wood, fabric or finish matters to your decision, contact us with the item and we will confirm what it is made from before you order.
Finish and color options vary by piece. Where a piece is offered in more than one, the choices are selectable on the product page. If you need a finish you cannot see listed, contact us with the item and we will tell you what is available.
A piece that needs assembly arrives with the hardware and instructions it needs, and any assembly is yours. Where a piece ships fully assembled, its product page says so.
Care guidance is shown on the product page where we have it. As a general rule, dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit, and keep pieces out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Close, but not identical. Wood is a natural material and subtle variation in grain and tone is part of each piece; stone and woven fabrics vary the same way, and every screen renders color a little differently. The product images show a representative example, not the individual unit packed for you. If you are matching a new piece to something you already own, contact us before ordering.
Not today — we do not offer swatches or physical samples. Instead, read that material's guide in the Material Care Center, which describes how it behaves and how it ages. If you would like to check something before you commit, ask us through the contact page and we will put the answer in writing. It is worth asking first: return shipping is the customer’s responsibility.
Treat every piece as indoor-only; we do not rate individual pieces for outdoor use. What we can tell you is the material. Each guide in the Material Care Center carries an indoor or outdoor line and rates the material one to five for durability, heat, moisture, scratch and sunlight resistance. For a specific piece, contact us through our Contact page with the item and how you will use it.
It is our library of material guides, linked from every product page. Search a material by name, or browse by family. Each guide covers what the material is, how well it resists heat, moisture, scratches and sunlight, the everyday routine, what never to do, and how it ages.
It means we are still confirming the details for that piece. Materials are identified from each piece’s specifications and product imagery, and we publish only what we can confirm. The page still links to the care library. If you would like to check something before you commit, ask us through the contact page and we will put the answer in writing.
Choosing & Measuring
Most product pages carry full measurements in the Dimensions section, with a scale drawing and a switch between inches and centimeters. If a measurement you need is not listed, contact us through our Contact page with the piece you are considering and we will confirm before you order.
Measure the floor space the piece will occupy and the wall it will sit against, then the clearances around it: room to walk past, to open a drawer or door fully, and to pull out a chair. Compare those against the measurements on the product page. If you would like to check something before you commit, ask us through the contact page and we will put the answer in writing.
Measure the route, not just the room: every doorway including the frame, the narrowest turn in the hallway, the stairwell, and the elevator car and its door. Note the smallest width and height you find and compare them against the measurements on the product page. The piece still has to physically fit through every one of them — contact us through our Contact page with those numbers if you are unsure.
Mark the footprint on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day; it shows a piece's presence in a way a product image cannot. Images flatten scale, so judge the piece against what is already in the room, such as the length of your sofa or the width of your rug. Our Style & Light Guide shows how to size a coffee table to your sofa and a lamp to the table it sits on, with a sizer for each.
Yes. Our range is organized around three aesthetics, Japandi, Modern and Organic, and mixing them is normal; a useful rule is to let one lead the room and use the second for accents.
Yes. We would much rather answer a question before you buy than handle a return afterwards. Ask us through the contact page and we will put the answer in writing. A person replies within one business day, Monday to Friday. If something cannot be confirmed, we will tell you plainly.
Ordering & Shipping
Orders are estimated to arrive 3–5 weeks after a 24-hour cancellation hold. For the first 24 hours after you order you can cancel at no cost; once that window closes, your order goes into processing. Every product page shows the estimated arrival dates for an order placed today, and your order confirmation email gives the dates for your order. If you need a piece by a particular date, contact us with the item before you order and we will tell you whether that is realistic.
Standard Delivery is free wherever it is offered, regardless of the piece, size, or weight: delivered to your door, for you to unpack and, where needed, assemble. It is the only delivery method we offer, so there is nothing to choose at checkout. We currently ship exclusively within the United States.
You have 24 hours from the moment you place your order to cancel it, for any reason and at no cost. During that window your order is held rather than processed — the piece is not allocated, prepared or handed to a carrier, so nothing has yet moved toward your door. Contact us through our Contact page from the address you used at checkout, with your order number in your message, and we will confirm the cancellation in writing and refund you in full. The same 24 hours covers changes rather than cancellation, such as a different finish or size, or a corrected delivery address. After the window closes your order enters processing: we will still try to stop it if the piece has not yet been dispatched, but once it is in transit it can no longer be modified, and our 21-day return applies instead. The full terms are on our Order Cancellations page.
You will get a confirmation email straight after checkout, and tracking details as soon as the carrier provides them. You can also see the status of any order in your account.
The United States only. That is the single market our checkout is set up for, so a delivery address outside the US will not be accepted and there is no international option to select. Within the US, Standard Delivery is free wherever it is offered, regardless of the piece, size or weight. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. We do not currently deliver to Alaska, Hawaii, US territories or military addresses. If you would like to know when we ship further afield, contact us through our Contact page and we will tell you when that changes.
You can check out as a guest; an account is never required to buy from us. An account keeps your order history, saved addresses and tracking links in one place rather than scattered across email. If you check out as a guest, your confirmation email is the only record you hold of the order, so keep it somewhere you can find it.
Our accounts do not use passwords. Enter your email address on the sign-in page and we email you a one-time code; type it in and you are signed in. The code is single use and expires after a short time, so request a new one if it has gone stale. If nothing arrives, check your spam folder.
Yes. At checkout you can enter a delivery address that differs from the billing address on your card. Enter the billing address exactly as your bank holds it, or the payment may be declined. If the delivery address needs to change after you order, contact us through our Contact page within 24 hours of ordering and we will correct it at no cost. After that we will still try, but once a piece is in transit it usually cannot be rerouted.
Not directly — delivery follows the carrier's schedule. If timing matters, contact us through our Contact page before you order and we will tell you what is realistic for that piece.
A confirmation email goes out immediately after checkout, with your order number and a link to its status page. If it has not arrived, check your spam folder, and consider whether the email address you entered at checkout might have a typo. If you have an account, every order is listed there with its current status. If not, contact us through our Contact page and we will trace it.
Sometimes, and it does not mean anything has gone wrong. Pieces are prepared and shipped individually, so one order can arrive in more than one delivery. If one part has arrived and another has not, contact us through our Contact page with your order number if it looks stalled.
Payment & Pricing
The payment methods available to you are shown at checkout. All transactions are SSL-encrypted.
Any installment options available to you are shown at checkout, and depend on your location and order value.
Prices shown are exclusive of sales tax. Applicable taxes are calculated at checkout based on your delivery address.
Because we price piece by piece rather than by category. Two coffee tables in the same collection can sit hundreds of dollars apart once size, materials and construction are accounted for — a solid timber top and a veneered one are not the same object, however similar the silhouette. If you are choosing between two pieces, contact us through our Contact page and we will talk you through the difference.
There are no discount codes, seasonal sales or bundle savings; every piece is priced as listed. If you have a question about the price of a particular piece, contact us through our Contact page.
Checkout is hosted and processed by Shopify, so your full card number goes to Shopify rather than to us. We never see it and never store it, and the connection is encrypted. Depending on your device and browser, Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay may also appear at checkout. If a page asking for card details ever looks wrong, stop and contact us through our Contact page.
Returns & Warranty
Two things, depending on why. A piece that arrived sound but is not right for you can be returned within 21 days of delivery; return shipping is the customer’s responsibility, and a 10% repacking deduction applies without the original packaging — see our Returns & Refunds page. A piece that arrived damaged, faulty or incorrect is not a return at all: report it within 48 hours of delivery, including damage you find while unpacking, and we put it right at our cost, with the remedy scaled to the damage. Contact us before sending anything back either way.
Coverage varies from piece to piece, so we do not publish one blanket warranty period across the collection — contact us through our Contact page with the piece you are considering and we will confirm in writing what applies to it before you buy, including when a piece carries none. See our Warranty page. Three things hold whatever the piece: report damage within 48 hours of delivery and we put it right at our cost (Damaged or Faulty Pieces), return a sound piece within 21 days (Returns & Refunds), or cancel within 24 hours of ordering (Order Cancellations). If a fault appears later under normal use, write to us anyway with photographs and your order number — we pursue any warranty that applies on your behalf and still consider what is reasonable where none does.
Note any visible damage on the carrier's receipt if you can, and keep the packaging. Then contact us through our Contact page within 48 hours of delivery, including for damage or missing parts you find while unpacking or assembling, with your order number. When we reply, attach photographs: the damage close up, the whole piece, and the boxes as they arrived. We confirm the remedy within one business day: a partial refund proportionate to the damage where the piece is cosmetically marked but sound, a replacement part where one hinge, runner or fitting is at fault, or a replacement or full refund where the piece is unusable or is not what you ordered. Full details are on our Damaged or Faulty Pieces page.
Eligible items can be returned within 21 days of delivery. For a full refund a piece should come back in the condition it was delivered in, unused and complete with all its parts, hardware and accessories; a piece damaged after delivery is still accepted, less a deduction for the damage. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility, and a 10% repacking deduction applies if a piece comes back without its original packaging. An assembled piece stays eligible. Contact us before sending anything back; the full conditions are on our Returns & Refunds page.
Yes. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility: we give you the return address, or arrange a collection and deduct its cost from your refund. If the piece comes back without its original packaging, a 10% repacking deduction also applies. We can't quote the collection cost here, so ask us about a specific piece before you order. Anything that arrives damaged, defective or incorrect is handled differently — contact us before arranging a return.
About Hawthorne & Reed
Hawthorne & Reed is an online shop for coffee tables and lighting, chosen across three aesthetics — Japandi, Modern and Organic. We choose for restraint instead of excess and permanence instead of trends, and every piece is judged on its material, its proportion and how it sits beside the rest of the collection. The principles behind that are set out in full on the Our Story page.
No. Hawthorne & Reed is a curator, not a manufacturer, and we do not design the pieces we sell. Our work is selection: choosing every piece, judging its materials and proportions against our standard, and standing behind it under our name. Most of what we look at never enters the collection. If the construction of a particular piece matters to you, contact us with the item before you order and we will tell you exactly what it is made of and how it is built.
No. Hawthorne & Reed sells online only, so there is no showroom to visit and no appointment to book. If you would like to check something before you commit, ask us through the contact page and we will put the answer in writing.
Use the form on our Contact page and choose the topic that fits your question. A real person replies within one business day. If your question is about a delivery, include your order number and we will chase it down for you.
The subscribe field at the foot of any page adds you to our email list, and New Arrivals, linked in the footer, shows our most recent additions whenever you want to browse. For ideas, the Style & Light Guide in the main menu shows how to size a coffee table and light the room around it.
