About Floor Lamps

Floor lamps for the living room and bedroom, from upright columns in solid wood, resin and woven rattan to arc lamps that hang a shade over the middle of a sofa.

For an upright lamp beside a chair or sofa, the bottom of the shade should sit close to the eye line of someone seated, so the bulb stays out of view while the light falls on the page. Most uprights here stand between 57½ and 65⅜ inches. The Carter Fabric Floor Lamp, on three splayed wood legs, tops out at 55⅛ inches, just above eye level from a sofa, while the 65-inch Brooks Resin Floor Lamp carries its pleated shade clear of a seated shoulder.

In a bedroom, a floor lamp can stand in for a bedside lamp where the nightstand is small. The Linden Fabric Floor Lamp, wrapped in oatmeal woven fabric with a bead pull chain, comes in 47¼, 59 and 70⅞-inch heights, so the shade can be matched to the bed and headboard.

Shade material sets the mood: fabric drums and cones spread a soft glow, the rice-paper Dalton glows through its sides, smoked glass on the Lennox cuts the glare of its exposed filament, and the Murdock's metal dome pushes light down in a tight circle. A warm-white bulb around 2700K suits both rooms. For reach over a sofa, see arc floor lamps; to build a set, add table lamps or browse all lighting.
